INFOtainment at it’s finest… BADUUUUU will move u…

of the 4xs i’ve seen ms. erykah badu- this was the finest performance yet! i’m so INSPIRED!!!! she sings truth. she is powerful. loving. authentic. silly. a genuine artist. she provided INFOtainment at it’s finest! and her style…tonight she wore giant gold wing earrings, yellow frumpy sweatpants with a t-shirt, warrior bracelets, and a top hat which she took off to reveal blond massive hair. she was stunning. she is elegant and crass. genius yet colloquial. powerful and grounded. a goddess yet one of the common folk. i adore her. i feel so fortunate my soul sister  of song, aneesah williams, hooked up section a, 8th row seats! incredible! we experienced completely, erykah’s depth and beautiful essence. she did every song i wanted hear from baduism on. her band was TIGHT. she inspired me to really take control, bring the band down, and let my voice and lyrics be heard as they are meant to be heard. she creates this magnificent space for the message to reach ur core without u realizing it reached u. ooooh and she was my muse for a new song as well! she closed with a rendition of “Believe” from the wiz -mmm and i’m feeling her message-i believe that me headlining @ the greek isn’t so far away 🙂

homage to calling yourself out!

today i’m here to promote calling yourself out! this kind of honesty takes balls! how much more truthful, real, and knowledgeable someone becomes in my eyes, when they can realize when they’ve made a mistake and can call themselves out on it in a GENUINE way! it takes awareness, responsibility, and courage to call yourself out! i enjoy transcending my ego by calling myself out. it takes my learning to a whole new level, verbalizing the lesson to others… calling yourself out! it’s sexy 😉

your ass can’t be on every stage at once!!!!

when visiting with my friend Mimi Vitale and her lovely mother Linda Jackson (both phenomenal singers and beautiful souls)… we got into the subject of female competitiveness and how we encounter this negative, unnecessary behavior quite often from other singers. fortunately, i am blessed that my girlfriend’s who are singers (Dannielle De Andrea, Aneesah Williams, Mimi Vitale) uplift, empower, and support each other- we have an incredible community… yet sadly, this is not common (believe it or not)… Mimi’s mom said the most right on thing the other night to the chicas who feel threatened by others doing their thing… ‘YOUR ASS CAN’T BE ON EVERY STAGE AT ONCE!!!” and there are enough stages to go around! we need to come from a place of knowing that there is enough room and LOVE for everyone!!!

here’s something i wrote in my journal 2 years ago, after an interaction with a singer who was VERY not cool to me in many ways…

there’s always room… maybe we’ve been conditioned to feel this competitive energy with one another… maybe we’ve been programmed to believe the LIE that there is only enough room for so many successful, confident, beautiful, intelligent, and talented women… i especially feel this negative energy from those pursuing the arts for some reason..isn’t art is a reflection of one’s own life… so how can my reflection of my life dim your reflection of yours???? isn’t it time that we ELEVATE ourselves to the point where we let go of those false beliefs and come to the realization that we all have our own uniqueness to bring and share with the world?! when i encourage you, when i compliment you, when i inspire you- i am genuine… i will not believe the lie… because i know that by elevating the lives of others your life reaches its highest dimensions…

Andrée’s favorite things (like Oprah’s but better)

actually, i truly, deeply, madly adore Oprah so this is just me walking in her already glorious footsteps!

7 of my favorite things:

*TED.com  – riveting talks by remarkable people, free to the world… is AMAZING! Whenever you need stimulation check out: http://www.ted.com/  Gurus give talks (that are usually less time than your favorite sitcom and better for your brain) that are persuasive, courageous, ingenious, fascinating, inspiring, beautiful, funny, and informative on DIVERSE subjects!

*Check out this documentary I just had the great pleasure to experience called War Dance : Three children living in a displacement camp in northern Uganda compete in their country’s national music and dance festival. The film really shows how music/dance can change the lives of those who have been through more than anyone can imagine…                                http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2saj4gJ4Lvw

*Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth (ok this is probably one of Oprah’s too)…”in illuminating the nature of this shift in consciousness, Tolle describes in detail how our current ego-based state of consciousness operates. Then gently, and in very practical terms, he leads us into this new consciousness. We will come to experience who we truly are—which is something infinitely greater than anything we currently think we are—and learn to live and breathe freely.”  http://www.eckharttolle.com/eckharttolle-newearth Also, Oprah’s class that goes along with the book is phenomenal- you get an even deeper experience with the book. I loved it! www.oprah.com/anewearth

*Liberation Yoga – my ultimate favorite yoga studio in LA. “Liberation Yoga is about living authentically. It’s about finding one’s true nature through the practice of yoga and sharing this limitless life force with the world. At Liberation we celebrate all styles of Hatha Yoga and all levels of practitioners, recognizing that every individual has a unique path to follow and every teacher has a unique gift to offer. Yoga seeks to create union, relieve suffering and thereby liberate the soul during this lifetime. ”  http://www.liberationyoga.com/

*KCRW for those who desire NEW innovative unique music rather than what is spoon fed to the masses… I especially love Garth Trinidad’s DJing skills. Chocolate City is delicious! Morning Becomes Eclectic is pretty nice too, hosted by Jason Bentley. Listen online:  http://www.kcrw.com/

*Bucheron cheese at Whole Foods with wine… mmmmmm…

*JANELLE MONAE – she is brilliant- her songwriting, her voice, her energy, her performances (she even crowd surfs), her style (she has a fro-hawk and wears tuxedo-like attire in a sexy smart way), she is intelligent and she is super genuine and NICE (I had the pleasure to meet her)… She’s been called a female Prince or Andre 3000 but to me she’s just herself- a unique voice in music that we so desperately need… http://www.myspace.com/janellemonae

empowerment through our sexuality

yes our sexuality is POWERFUL!!!! …powerful in our connection with others- as a performer on stage as well as in our daily (and nightly) interactions with others…  i think it’s amazing when women and men are authentic in their sexuality and how they express it…but there’s a thin line between what’s for show (don’t try so hard/don’t give it all away!) and what is genuine/natural/effortless (you just being you).  and it’s sad to me when a woman feels that it is her ONLY option in gaining love, admiration, affection, and empowerment is through her sex. in fact sometimes our sexuality can distract from our other talents and true intellect. i’m making it one of my missions (one of many) to help women (especially young girls) to appreciate/honor/cherish/embrace their femininity and sexuality but not use it as a primary source of empowerment…

“i’ve been empowered by my sexuality and found it fleeting and false… i want to be known for my word…my intellect…my thoughts…and ideas—dancing in my mind, like fireflies, pure electricity… because that is eternal…” – from my journal on June 9, 2006…
